D2 tool and die steel bar is a high-carbon, high-chromium steel known for its excellent resistance to wear, hardness, and toughness. It generally contains about 1.50% carbon, 12.00% chromium, 0.90% molybdenum, and 0.80% vanadium along with trace amounts of manganese, silicon, and phosphorus. Upon heat treatment, D2 steel reaches a hardness of around 58-62 HRC, which makes it very suitable for applications with high wear-resistance requirements, e.g., punches and dies and shear blades. Some other mechanical properties include high tensile strength, good machinability, and resistant to abrasive wear albeit at greater risk of fracturing owing to the brittleness.

Tool and Die Steel D2 Bars can be welded, but it's challenging due to their high carbon content. Preheating, post-weld heat treatment, and using specific filler materials are essential.
Tool and Die Steel D2 Bars are semi-corrosion-resistant due to high chromium content (12%). While not fully stainless, they offer moderate resistance to rust in less aggressive environments.
Tool and Die Steel D2 Bars should be stored in a dry, ventilated area to prevent moisture exposure. Use protective coatings like oil or rust inhibitors to minimize corrosion risk.
D2 tool and die steel bars are extensively used in the manufacturing industries, where high wear resistance and durability are necessary. Typical applications include cutting tools, dies, molds, punches, shear blades, and stamping tools. Because of its high hardness and resistance to abrasion, it is used as a forming and shaping agent for metals, plastics, and other materials. D2 is also employed in cold working tools such as blanking dies, threading tools, and deep drawing die presses, where high precision and durability are required. While D2 is still popular among manufacturers in automotive, aerospace, and metalworking industries for tools that are subject to high wear, it is rather brittle when subjected to impact.
