Stainless Steel 422 has 11–13% chromium, 0.20–0.30% carbon, 0.70–1.25% molybdenum, and 0.80–1.25% tungsten with approximately 0.5–1% nickel content. It can be heat-treated to strength levels up to a high degree, with tensile strength in excess of 1000 MPa and yield strength of approximately 700 MPa when hardened and tempered. The alloy is resistant to mechanical failure at temperatures up to 1200°F (649°C) and has moderate corrosion resistance. It is ferritic and possesses favorable machinability when delivered in the annealed or normalized state.
