SAE 1015 round bars and rods consist mainly of carbon (0.13–0.18%) and manganese (0.30–0.60%), a low-carbon steel grade that is very machinable and weldable. This steel possesses average tensile strength (around 440–550 MPa) and high ductility, hence appropriate where cold forming and bending are needed. The steel is readily carburized, imparting surface hardness to wear parts. SAE 1015 can provide acceptable strength-machinability balance and thus is a first-choice material for parts that need uncomplicated machining, moderate strength, and uniform performance under conditions of normal stress.
