Mu-Metal Bars and Rods consist of about 77–80% nickel, 15–18% iron, 4–5% molybdenum, and trace amounts of copper. This peculiar makeup endows Mu-Metal with its characteristic characteristics: very high magnetic permeability (to 80,000 at low field strength), low coercivity, and very good shielding against low-frequency magnetic fields. The alloy’s tensile strength is approximately 620 MPa, yield strength is about 228 MPa, and elongation is close to 40%. It possesses a density of approximately 8.74 g/cm³ and a Curie temperature of approximately 410°C. Mu-Metal cannot be hardened by heat treatment and will have to be annealed in hydrogen to recover its magnetic qualities.
