What is M2 Steel Bar and Rod?

M2 Steel Bars and Rods are made up of high carbon and high alloy content, comprising of about 0.85% carbon, 6.0% tungsten, 5.0% molybdenum, 4.0% chromium, 2.0% vanadium, and the balance iron. This alloy imparts M2 its outstanding hardness, which is normally around 62–65 HRC after heat treatment. It possesses more than 2,000 MPa tensile strength, with outstanding wear resistance, red hardness (preserves hardness at elevated temperatures), and fair toughness. M2 steel is extensively applied to cutting tools due to its capacity to resist extreme working conditions and can be ground to a high polish.

M2 Steel Bar and Rod Uses

M2 Steel Rods and Bars find major application in the production of high-speed cutting tooling like end mills, reamers, taps, drills, saw blades, and punches. Due to their red hardness and wear properties, they are best suited for high-speed machining of hard materials. In automotive applications, M2 is employed in precision tooling and parts that experience friction and heat. Aerospace application is structural tooling, dies, and inserts. M2 steel is also employed in industrial knives, cold work tools, and precision parts where edge retention, strength, and durability are critical for sustained performance in high-stress situations.
