What is Kovar Bar and Rod?

Kovar Bars and Rods consist of about 29% nickel, 17% cobalt, and the remainder iron with minute amounts of such elements as manganese, silicon, and carbon. This alloy finds fame due to its closely controlled coefficient of thermal expansion (5.1 to 5.9 µm/m·°C between 20°C and 200°C), which is quite comparable to that of borosilicate glass and alumina ceramics. Kovar provides tensile strength of 520–540 MPa, yield strength of approximately 340–380 MPa, and elongation of 30–42% in the annealed condition. Its density is around 8.3 g/cm³, and its melting point is around 1449°C, with very good dimensional stability under thermal cycling.
