AISI 4140 is a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel containing 0.38–0.43% carbon, 0.75–1.0% manganese, 0.8–1.1% chromium, and 0.15–0.25% molybdenum. It has tensile strength of 655–1080 MPa and yield strength of around 415–655 MPa. 4140 bars have high fatigue strength, good impact resistance, and can be heat-treated for increased hardness. The alloy shows superior toughness even in hardened states. It also maintains machinability and stability and is thus appropriate for critical engineering components. This renders it one of the most common alloy steels.

4140 Bars/Rods are suitable for applications where there is a need for high strength and abrasion resistance. They are used in the manufacture of axles, shafts, gears, fasteners, dies, and tooling machines. The toughness and endurance limit of the alloy render it suitable for equipment used in mining, crankshafts, and structural members. It is also utilized in heavily stressed components of automotive and hydraulic systems. Heat-treatability and machinability enable customization of hardness levels in applications. With high tensile strength and deformation resistance, 4140 steel is a popular option in most heavy-duty industrial operations.
